How Do You Get Your Motorcycle License in Nevada?
In Nevada, obtaining a motorcycle license involves several steps that ensure you meet the skill and safety requirements needed before riding on Nevada roads with other motor vehicles.
Ensure Age Eligibility
Before you start your path to becoming a licensed motorcycle operator, you must be at least 16 years of age to apply for a Nevada motorcycle license.
If you are above 16 but under 18, you must obtain a signed Nevada DMV parental consent form and complete a driver's education course.
Apply for a Motorcycle Instruction Permit (Only for First Timer Riders)
If this is your first time going through motorcycle registration, you'll need to obtain a motorcycle instruction permit first.
To get this motorcycle instructional permit, you must pass a written test that covers traffic laws, road signs, and motorcycle-specific maneuvers.
In addition to passing a written motorcycle knowledge test, you may have to also take a vision test.
Take a Motorcycle Skills Test or Road Test
In Nevada, before obtaining your motorcycle license, you must pass either one of the DMV-approved courses or a DMV road skills test.
Motorcycle Safety Course
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation, public Nevada colleges such as CSN, and motorcycle dealerships all provide motorcycle skills tests in which you'll receive an MSF card or other certification and be able to skip taking a road skills test.
Road Skills Test
If you don't take a motorcycle test from an approved vendor, you'll need to take a skills test administered by the DMV office.
To begin one of these tests, you'll need to schedule online with your local DMV office.
DMV tests evaluate your ability to ride a motorcycle safely, so it's a good idea to review the motorcycle operator manual before taking one.
Submit Documentation
After passing the required tests, you'll need to bring proof of the following documents to the DMV before completing the licensing process:
- Proof of identity and residency
- Parental consent and proof of driver's education and written knowledge test completion (If under 18)
- Vision test results
In addition to submitting the documentation above, you will also need to pay a licensing fee and any registration fees there may be.
How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a Motorcycle License in Nevada
The minimum age requirement to obtain a valid motorcycle license in Nevada is 16.
Additional Requirements for Minors
Along with the age requirements, teens must abided by the Nevada teen driving requirements listed under NRS 483.2521 by:
- Providing Parental Consent: For a minor to obtain a motorcycle driver's license, a signed parental consent form must be present at the DMV.
- Completing a Driver's Education: A course covering the basics of operating a motor vehicle must be completed.
- Motorcycle Safety Course: An approved DMV motorcycle safety course will have to be completed.
Do I Need a Motorcycle License for a Scooter or Moped in Nevada?
Whether you need a motorcycle license for a scooter or moped in Nevada depends on the motor vehicle's engine size and power.
Mopeds
According to Nevada's moped laws, you do not need a motorcycle license to operate a moped on Nevada public roads. However, you do need a Nevada class C license or higher.
This will only apply if the moped fits the Nevada definition of a moped outlined under NRS 486.038, which is:
- No more than two or three wheels
- An engine displacement of 50cc or less
- A maximum speed of 30 mph on a flat surface
Scooters
Scooters with an engine size of 50cc or less do not require a motorcycle license to drive on Nevada roads; however, scooters with an engine size larger than 50cc are considered motorcycles and will require you to obtain a motorcycle driver's license.
